Abstract
The study titled "Mobilizing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): A Case Study of
Applying Participatory Democracy to Promote Road Safety in Thai Youth" is a pilot project for two
educational institutions in Samut Prakan and Chai Nat provinces of Thailand. The goal is to analyze
and recommend measures for reducing road traffic accidents involving youths in the study areas,
which would contribute to achieving sustainable development goals. Altogether, 116 youths from
the two educational institutions participated in the study and created projects through
participatory process: planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating. Ten projects were
implemented by the youths. It was found that the target groups could identify problems and
create projects to promote road safety. Most projects involved educational and engineering
measures aimed at increasing road safety. There was, however, a lack of projects that addressed
regulatory or enforcement measures. The researchers also found that participatory democratic
processes caused positive changes in traffic- accident- related attitudes and behaviors. The
researchers suggested that participatory democratic processes should be applied with other target
groups linked with SDG targets. To encourage comprehensive measures, conditions or
requirements should be imposed on the participatory problem identification and project proposal
processes so that participating groups undertake activities representing all 3E ( education,
engineering, enforcement) road accident reduction measures
Key words: participatory democracy, road safety, sustainable development
